MARK OF BENJAMIN BURT, BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, CIRCA 1770
Baluster form on a spreading stepped circular foot, the shoulder engraved with drapery swags, with leaf-capped scroll spout, wooden loop handle, and wooden pineapple-form finial, engraved to one side of the body with foliate script initial A, the underside further engraved with block initials S pellet G, marked on underside, Kane mark A, and with scratch weight 19=7

Specialist note

Benjamin Burt (1729 - 1805) was born the fifth son of silversmith John Burt (1692 - 1745). Already a prominent silversmith family, Benjamin and his older brothers Samuel (1724 - 1754) and William (1726 - 1752) likely apprenticed with their father until his death in 1745. Similar teapots by Benjamin Burt are in the collections of The Clark Institute, Williamstown, Massachusetts (Obj. No. 2003.4.222), and The Currier Museum of Art, Manchester, New Hampshire (Obj. No. 2015.2).
