Specialist note
A precise and solemn depiction, this portrait exhibits key details that are often associated with Noah North’s painting style such as sharply delineated facial features, long, narrow fingers with blunt nails and very detailed lace and fabric. Portraying Adah Crowell Salisbury (1762-1850) and Martha Sophronia Rich (b. 1836) of Western (now Westernville), New York the present work is thought to have been painted around 1841 when North returned to Darien, New York from Ohio and married his neighbor Ann C. Williams. For further information on North see Nancy C. Muller and Jacquelyn Oak, “Noah North (1809-1880),” The Magazine Antiques (November 1977), p. 939-945.
