AMERICAN SCHOOL (LATE 18TH/ EARLY 19TH CENTURY)

Thomas Contee Bowie (1771-1813) of Prince George’s County, Maryland was the son of Captain Fielder Bowie (1745-1794) and Elizabeth Claggett. He married Mary Mackall Bowie (1775-1825) daughter of Governor Robert Bowie of Maryland (1750-1818). A very similar portrait is illustrated in Walter Worthington Bowie, The Bowies and their Kindred: A Genealogical and Biographical History (Washington, 1899), p. 108.
