Specialist note
Initially introduced in white gold in 2006, Patek Philippe Reference 5140 replaced the 32 year reign of the beloved Reference 3940. A year later, such as the present lot, Reference 5140 was produced in yellow gold. Thanks to the impressive Patek Philippe inhouse Caliber 240Q, which is also found in Ref. 3940, a perpetual calendar, moon phases, leap year, and 24 hour indicator are all able to fit into a compact 37mm case while maintaining an impressive thickness of only 9mm.
It takes an exceptional amount of fine watchmaking to achieve such as feat, proving Patek Phillipe as a superior manufacturer. Caliber 240Q is able to achieve automatic self-winding while maintaining slimness through the utilization of a microrotor. The 22k yellow gold microrotor acts as a double edge sword by allowing the viewer to fully appreciate the Côtes de Genève, Anglage, and Perlage finishing techniques while maintaining automatic self-winding capabilities. The present lot, Reference 5140J is an exceptional contemporary wristwatch that will remain a timeless classic with rich DNA an history.
