Writing in the early days of their affair, Puccini thanks Rose Ader for a letter which enclosed a portrait photograph – 'It's good, but you are better'. The remainder of the letter is a torrent of passionate feelings: 'I love you so much that I feel as though I were going to die ... I wish to give you my all, my very existence, my art, every minute of my daily life – devote myself entirely to you! What a dream! But destiny keeps us apart and divided! Goodbye my adored treasure. I send you all of my kisses on your beautiful mouth ...'.
