Note du spécialiste
Perhaps the single most influential figure in Richard Avedon’s creative life was the legendary art director of Harper’s Bazaar, Alexey Brodovitch, his prime mentor and inspiration in the early stages of his career. Brodovitch had an exceptional intuition in recognising potential and in pushing talent to deliver of its best. He was unforgiving of mediocrity, always conscious of the need to stop the magazine reader in their tracks. ‘Astonish me’ was the daunting gauntlet that he threw down to his contributing photographers.
By the time Avedon made this graphically dramatic composition of the abstracted torso of model Lauren Hutton on a beach in the Bahamas, he had left Harper’s Bazaar for Vogue; but Brodovitch’s words never ceased to motivate him. The present image perfectly fulfils the ambitious expectations that this guiding figure had set two decades earlier for this young photographic prodigy.
