Note du spécialiste
The boldness of Valérie Belin's technique ensures that her work breaks the confines of portraiture. The model loses her humanity in a quest: the desire to “be another person”. The artificial standards of Western beauty – dress, hair, make-up, light – are blurred. The beautiful eyes, rendered green by contact lenses, remain haunted. The artist intends to create an unsettling strangeness for the viewer. She explains that this feeling arises when faced with doubt “either by an apparently animated object that makes you wonder whether it is really a living being, or by a lifeless object that makes you wonder whether it could be animated.”
The photograph builds on the series Modèles II in which Belin explores the notion of the avatar. From metamorphoses to virtual characters, the artist's subjects always remain close to abstraction. The unreality and lack of expressiveness are rooted in the photographer's approach initiated in a first series on celluloid mannequins in 2003.
