A SET OF THREE NORTH ITALIAN EMPIRE GILTWOOD SIDE CHAIRS
ONE EARLY 19TH CENTURY, IN THE MANNER OF LORENZO SANTI, TWO FIRST HALF 20TH CENTURY
Two rectangular padded backs and seats covered in yellow silk, one in green-striped silk, with applied rosettes and leaves overall, on tapering legs
Each 37 in. (94 cm.) high; 20 1/2 in. (52 cm.) wide; 20 in. (51 cm.) deep

Probably a gift from Gerald Tyrwhitt-Wilson, Lord Berners to The Countess of Avon.

Specialist note

The treatment of the applied carving to the toprail is highly resonant of the work of Lorenzo Santi and the celebrated and very large suite of seat-furniture made for Napoleon I’s uncle, Cardinal Joseph Fesch (1763-1839), probably for his Roman embassy, the Palazzo del Buffalo-Ferraioli in the Piazza Colonna.
