Specialist note
The treatment of the applied carving to the toprail is highly resonant of the work of Lorenzo Santi and the celebrated and very large suite of seat-furniture made for Napoleon I’s uncle, Cardinal Joseph Fesch (1763-1839), probably for his Roman embassy, the Palazzo del Buffalo-Ferraioli in the Piazza Colonna. For a single side chair from the suite, sold from the Edward James Foundation; see Christie's, London, 15 December 2016, lot 111.
