Certified Cosway binding, with portrait miniatures by C.B. Currie depicting King Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette, and their family. With certificate bound in: “This is No. 900 of the Cosway Bindings invented by J.H. Stonehouse with Miniatures on Ivory by Miss Currie,” signed by both the inventor and the artist.

Octavo (219 x 139mm). Frontispiece portrait. 28-pp publishers’ ads at end. Full dark sienna crushed levant morocco by Riviere & Son, with two hand-painted portrait miniatures on ivory inset in the upper cover bordered with gilt-rules within a curved gilt panel, both covers with gilt rules, borders, and corner-pieces, spine gilt in six compartments with raised bands, double gilt-rule on board edges, turn-ins gilt, moiré silk doublures, top edge gilt, stamp-signed by the binders on upper turn-in and stamped “Cosway Binding / Invented by J.H. Stonehouse” on the fore-edge boards (touch of discoloration at cover edges, neat repair to upper joint). Velvet-lined clamshell box. Provenance: Swann Galleries, 17 June 2010, lot 333.
