MEIJI PERIOD (LATE 19TH CENTURY-EARLY 20TH CENTURY), SIGNED SAN'IN KISAI (ARAKAWA KISAI; 1827-1906)
Finely carved as a small turtle on top of a large turtle, the surface finished to resemble turtle's skin and shell, eyes inlaid with crystal, signature on underside
6 1/8 in. (15.6 cm.) long

Specialist note

Born in Izumo in nowadays Shimane Prefecture, Arakawa Kisai is a well celebrated as a genius sculptor. On top of an almighty artist who also mastered painting, calligraphy, metalworks, he was a physicist. Arakawa’s sculpture Inadahime was exhibited at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago.
