This design for a carpet seller was one of several hundred costume designs that Bakst created for the music hall production Aladin ou la Lampe merveilleuse for Georges Thenon (1884-1941), under the pseudonym of RIP, which premiered on 20 May 1919 at Théâtre Marigny, Paris. The production consisted of eleven scenes; one of which was called 'Belleville'.
