AFTER A DESIGN BY THOMAS HOPE, CIRCA 1810
Of curule form with ram’s head terminals, with stylized acanthus leaves and a flowerhead at the intersections, below a seat covered in silk brocade, French or Italian, circa 1735-1740, above down swept legs ending in hoof feet, redecorated, with printed and inscribed Ann and Gordon Getty Collection inventory label

Specialist note

The silhouette of this stool is of ancient Roman curule form. A closely related model was designed by the antiquarian collector and tastemaker Thomas Hope (1769-1831) for his house in Duchess Street and published in plate 12, no. 4 of his Household Furniture and Interior Decoration (1807).
