‌A member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, Tony Scherman has been the subject of more than one hundred solo exhibitions throughout the world, in Canada, the United States, Europe, Hong Kong and Beijing. His work is included in the collections of the Los Angeles County Museum, the Denver Museum of Art, the San Diego Museum, the High Museum Atlanta, the Birmingham Museum of Art, the Library of Congress, Washington, the Contemporary Arts Society London, the Arts Council of Great Britain, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the FRAC Île-de-France and the Schlossmuseum Murnau in Germany. His encaustic works exude an almost romantic melancholy. The relief of the wax gives his portraits a poignant depth of gaze, which seems to testify to a disturbing and touching sincerity. Emma Bovary seems frozen here, the incomprehension of her vulnerable gaze giving her an almost childlike and naive look.
