Note du spécialiste

This is a second very slightly smaller version after the work in the Hamburger Kunsthalle (circa 1916, Inv. no 1972⁄11 13273 - D.C/O.-Z. no 570, 53 x 40 cm). The composition of the present lot is closely related to Khnopff's work on paper En prière (circa 1916; D.C/O.-Z. 574), which similarly uses the motif of the model's praying hands covering her lips to emphasise the element of silence.
