Specialist note
Francis Le Piper was from an important Flemish family settled in Canterbury. His father was a successful merchant, and a private income enabled Le Piper to pursue his interest in art for his own amusement, almost exclusively choosing comic subjects. This drawing is a typical caricature of figures he may have met in a tavern. Several drawings by him are in the British Museum.
