Plusieurs siècles après la mort du poète Dante Alighieri en 1321, le cardinal Luigi Valenti Gonzaga décida de faire ériger à Ravenne un mausolée englobant la tombe initiale qui comprenait le portrait en marbre réalisé par Pietro Lombardo à la fin du XVe siècle. L’architecte Camillo Morigia (1743-1795) fut chargé de construire le bâtiment et porta son choix sur un temple de plan carré surmonté d’une coupole, dans le style palladien, qui s’élève toujours à côté de la basilique San Francesco.
