Specialist note
Displaying individualistic interpretations of urban designs, retaining all its original components and bearing an old surface, this high chest is an outstanding survival of early American rural craftsmanship. The thistle-like finials, pilasters lacking capitals and raised pad feet indicate the workmanship of a highly skilled and inventive woodworker. As recounted to the consignor by Peter Tillou, the chest was part of the renowned collection of Ellerton M. Jette (1900-1987), an owner of the Hathaway Shirt Company in Waterville, Maine. Jette and his wife Edith donated much of their collection of folk art and Impressionist paintings to Colby College, where he was a long-time trustee.
