Specialist note

In the 1870s, Whistler produced a series of self-portraits in chalk, charcoal, and pastel on brown paper, measuring between about 7 x 6 inches and 11 x 7 inches. Other known self-portraits from the series are in the collections of the Colby College Museum of Art, Waterville, Maine; the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois; and the Freer Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.
