A living myth, social model and international sex symbol, Brigitte Bardot owes her star debut to the first man of her life: Roger Vadim Plémiannikov (1928-2000). Born into a Russian nobility family, he was a famous reporter-photographer for Paris Match and later a French director, screenwriter, actor and novelist. In 1949, he noticed Brigitte Bardot, then aged 15, on the cover of Elle magazine and asked the director Marc Allégret, whose assistant he was, to audition her. The film was not made, but love at first sight was immediate.
Because of her young age, her parents were firmly opposed to this relationship and decided to send her to study overseas until she came of age. The young Brigitte, distraught and taking advantage of her parents' absence, tried to commit suicide. Her parents came home early and found her in a coma with a letter explaining her actions. Her parents agreed that Brigitte could stay in France on condition that the young lovebirds wait patiently for her to come of age before getting married.
Roger then devoted himself body and soul to launching his young wife into the world of cinema and made her first film, And God created woman (1956), which transform Brigitte Bardot in a world star.
The romance ended the same year, as Bardot fell in love with her screen partner.
