OLIM COLLECTION, SANTA CRUZ
This collection was discovered in the cellar of a house near Santa Cruz, on the east part of the island. The previous owner had left Madeira recently when he sold his property, the wine he inherited from his great grandfather. Clearly no one had looked after the casks as they were never topped up!
After almost a century and half the Madeira was very concentrated, on the bottom of 600 liter barrels. The tartar acidic on the bottom was 2,5 cms thick. The forgotten casks!
We have tasted all wines. Some were just too concentrated, yet we found two gems of unbelievable quality.

Bottled from cask in 2019. New wax capsules with GD seal. New stencilling. Levels: into-neck
Transferred from oak cask to demi-john in 2019.
Tasting note: First tasted April 2019. Deep iodine color and ditto first impression on the nose. Intense nose of fine tobacco, followed by dried peaches. Uplifting aromas. Clearly a concentration after long maturation in cask. This has a beautiful multilayered nose that keeps you coming back. Touch of salty.
Soft texture refined and classy taste, rich dried fruits over an extract rich mid, the explosion of aromas on the after taste is deeply impressive. All sorts of different flavors of grapefruits, waxy aromas, papaya, banana leaf and honey sing through your mouth. Impressive, great Bual.
This is amazingly complex. How much better can a Bual get, high up there among the legends of Madeira Wine.
Almost a year later with similar note. An explosion of intensity with depth. Deep dark cacao. Impressive texture and length. Now getting smoother. Very impressive.
The one year later; deep nose of honey cake, milk chocolate and intense concentrated aromas.
The taste now has rounded much more, still the extracts are very noticeable on the tongue. Great power of contraction. The acidity just goes on and on with a phenomenal length. So strong and extract rich. Impressive still. Last tasted April 2021. Edwin Vos
