THE 2009 VINTAGE
The 2009 Bordeaux vintage is highly reputed, reflected in its scoring by wine critic Robert Parker, who gave 18 wines 100 Points in the vintage, setting a record for 100 point wines in one vintage. Pomerol in particular is noted of high quality alongside the classic plots on the Left Bank including Médoc, St Julien and Margaux. A cold and dry winter was followed by a relatively wet spring with some variability. The summer was the saviour of the vintage. May and June were warm, but a heat spell from the 27th of May to the 4th of June encouraged flowering in the region, which was very welcomed. The summer continued to be warm and dry, but not too extreme, which led some producers to call 2009 ‘a deckchair vintage’ in so far as they did not have to work to combat rot and other disease in the vineyards. Grapes matured steadily with little rain discouraging swelling and adding to higher concentrations. Apart from a minor rainfall in early September, conditions were perfect and remained flawless for the remainder of the harvest. This allowed growers to be in complete control, in terms of their decisions on when to pick, particularly where the Cabernet Sauvignon grape was concerned, which were picked even later in September to allow for the already concentrated grapes to steadily concentrate and ripen further. The perfect combination of warm, sunny days and cool nights was one of the keys to the success of 2009 Bordeaux wine.
