ENRICO CASTELLANI
'I think it is illegitimate and pretentious to want to deform space in a definitive and irreversible way, with the presumption, moreover, of wanting to have an impact on reality: this is, at best, a useless operation. It is legitimate, at most, to structure it in such a way as to make it perceivable and sensorially available; space, after all, interests and preoccupies us because it contains us'
Executed in 1984 - the year that Enrico Castellani represented Italy at the Venice Biennale for the third time - Superficie bianca is an elegant example of the works that defined his oeuvre. Comprising a pristine white canvas stretched over a bed of rhythmically-placed nails, it demonstrates the pioneering interrogation of light, movement and form that positioned Castellani at the forefront of the Post-War Italian avant-garde. Along with Lucio Fontana's Tagli and Piero Manzoni's Achromes, these extraordinary, near-sculptural apparitions were among the most influential creations of their time, resonating with the aims of the contemporaneous German ZERO group and ultimately paving the way for the international evolution of Minimalism. By the time of the present work, Castellani had been producing his Superfici for a quarter of a century, and would continue to refine them for the remainder of his oeuvre. Here, the canvas - once conceived as a support for art - becomes an object in its own right, proclaiming nothing more than the fact of its material presence.
Castellani was inspired early on by artists ranging from Kazimir Malevich and Constantin Brâncuşi to Piet Mondrian and Vladimir Tatlin. Within the thriving creative circles of 1950s Milan, these influences gave rise to a wholly new conception of art: one that derived its meaning purely from its physical interaction with the world. Castellani initially employed hazelnuts as means of modulating the surface of his works, before embracing nails: a medium that allowed him to engineer the tension and pattern of the canvas with precision. While he experimented with a range of colours and materials over the course of his oeuvre, white works such as the present stand among the purest expression of his artistic goals. "A white empty surface is the most abstract thing one can possible imagine", he explained. Here, drained of all reference to the outside world, art is set free: the burdens of narrative and representation dissolve in the elemental magic of its surface.
