Unseen in public since 1989, when it was acquired by the present owner, Wallendas is a poignant large-scale example of Salvatore Scarpitta's rich material language. Comprising wood, straps, rope, enamel and resin on canvas, it demonstrates his extraordinary dissolution of the boundaries between painting and sculpture during the Post-War period. Divided into three bands like a piece of geometric abstraction, its surface is scored, spattered and layered with real-world objects - harnesses, buckles and poles. The work's title relates to the daredevil circus stunt troupe "The Flying Wallendas", whose high-wire performances first gained popularity during the 1940 and '50s. In 1962, the year before the work was created, tragedy struck when two of the members fell to their deaths while performing the iconic seven-person pyramid in Detroit. Seen in this context, the work's materials take on new meaning, evoking the acrobatic apparatus used by the group. For Scarpitta, who saw his creations as tools for renewal and healing, it represents a powerful tribute to those who lost their lives in the name of art.
Born in America to an Italian father and a Polish-Russian mother, Scarpitta served in the United States army during the Second World War. Working as a "Monuments Man" - responsible for the restitution of stolen or damaged art objects - he developed an interest in themes of recovery and salvation. Returning to Italy after the war, he imbibed the spirit of optimism and experimentation that was sweeping the country: "We were survivors, and the happiness and desire to live were so great that we created a new art", he explained. His use of deliberately humble materials - presaging developments in Arte Povera - shares much in common with the works of Alberto Burri, which were similarly interpreted as metaphors for repair and regeneration. The present work's central incision, meanwhile, invites comparison with the slashed canvases of Lucio Fontana, who - like Scarpitta - believed in destruction as an act of creation.
Scarpitta returned to America in 1958. It was during this period that his language began to solidify, giving rise initially to his wrapped canvas works created from shredded, bandage-like strips of linen. The works of his American contemporaries, too, had an impact upon his visual language - echoes of Mark Rothko's colour fields, Barnett Newman’s "Zips" or even the "Combines" of Robert Rauschenberg flicker in the present work. For Scarpitta, however, his works retained a uniquely iconoclastic agenda, deeply linked to ideas about rebirth and transformation. "I needed to run the risk of leaving fingerprints", he explained. "I wanted to come into contact with the hidden, most difficult nature of things. Otherwise I would never have been cured of the war". Art, for him, was about moving forwards - a theme embodied elsewhere in his fascination with racing driving and sprint cars. Perhaps Scarpitta recognised something of this spirit in the story of the Wallendas: a group who, at all costs, pushed the boundaries of human capability.
