Thomas Struth’s 1990s landscapes fall within a subtle continuum of his streets images. Here, the photographer embarkes on themes such as flowers and rural scenes. At the same time, developing a reflection on the connections between sites of exhibitionand that of art, our relation to history and cultural heritage, and the role of photography as an art medium.
Between 1991 and 1993, Thomas Struth produced this series in the surroundings of Winterthur, and more specifically in the hospital’s gardens, where the photographs were eventually exhibited in the thirty seven hospital rooms. The photographs are composed with flowers and botanical views, themes that are already largely exploited in history of art and history of photography. However, his interpretation is no less unique and the beauty of these landscapes is transcendental.
