Anonymous sale; Sotheby's, London, 15 November 1978, lot 78, where purchased by the present owner's father, and by descent.

Specialist note

The present work bears similarities in its handling to other decorative works from the late 1920s, and it is likely that it is a rug design. The two small circles are the eyes of a fish, with the shell-like form in the centre of the composition lending a submarine quality to the work.
