CIRCA 1780, ATTRIBUTED TO INCE AND MAYHEW, MINOR VARIATIONS TO FAN INLAY ON TOPS
Each demilune top inlaid with sunflower and fan, the case fitted with three graduated drawers on square legs ending in brass sabots
34 ¾ in. (88 cm.) high, 48 in. (122 cm.) wide, 19 ½ in. (49.5 cm.) deep

Note du spécialiste

The sunflower decoration to the tops is strikingly similar to the a pair of semi-elliptical side tables made for the Dowager Duchess of Beaufort between 1778 and 1798 for Badminton House attributed to Ince and Mayhew (L. Wood Catalogue of Commodes, London, 1994, p. 231).

These commodes also bear a resemblance to the documented commission made for Warren Hastings in the late 1770s for The Blue Bedroom Daylesford (as recorded in their inventory in 1834), much of which was bought by Lord Harrowby for Sandon Hall in 1853. This features a collection of satinwood furniture including a similar demilune commode as illustrated in L. Boynton, The Furniture of Warren Hastings, The Burlington Magazine, August 1970, pp. 508-520.
