Hugo described his masterwork as “a progress from evil to good, from injustice to justice, from falsehood to truth, from night to day, from appetite to conscience, from corruption to life; from bestiality to duty, from hell to heaven, from nothingness to God”.
Three volumes, octavo. Half-titles. (Closed tear to margin of p. 289 in volume 2.) Original cloth (light wear and sunning to spine). Provenance: Hugh Walpole (English novelist, 1884-1941; ‘Brackenburn’ bookplate) – William Cox (signature).
