Les propriétaires ainsi que l’inventeur de la Maison de Verre eurent dans leurs collections d’importantes œuvres du peintre italien Massimo Campigli faisant toutes deux écho à leurs professions.
Pierre Chareau, le brillant architecte, avait en sa possession, avec la Villa Belvedere de 1930, la seule vue extérieure complète d’une maison peinte par Campigli au cours de cette période (aujourd’hui conservée au sein de la collection Estorick à Londres). Le présent tableau Le Grand Magasin, riche de détails anatomiques féminins, avait quant à lui été acquis par le couple Dalsace pour leur maison, qui abritait également le cabinet gynécologique de Jean Dalsace.
Acquise peu de temps après sa réalisation et accrochée pendant des décennies au sein des espaces de vie de la Maison de verre, l’œuvre n’a que très rarement été exposée au public, et uniquement à Paris. Elle fut d’abord installée en face de l’escalier menant à la chambre principale, auquel son motif faisait écho, puis dans la chambre elle-même. C'est sans doute dans un souci de discrétion que l'œuvre n'apparaît que rarement dans les publications concernant la Maison.
Le tableau, comme la maison qui l’a abrité, garde ainsi encore aujourd’hui quelque chose d’énigmatique.
Tableau absolument crucial dans l’Œuvre de Campigli, Le Grand Magasin, réalisé quelques mois après l’expérience étrusque qui marqua fortement le peintre au cours de sa visite à la Villa Giulia de Rome, est par ailleurs influencé par l’atmosphère qui régnait dans le Paris des années 1920 où Campigli s’efforçait de percer, avec dans son proche entourage Alberto Giacometti et son voisin d’atelier, Alexander Calder.
Campigli arrive à Paris en 1919, comme correspondant du Corriere della Sera. Parallèlement à son travail de journaliste, il suit d’abord des cours avec le sculpteur Antoine Bourdelle, à l’académie libre de la « Grande Chaumière ». Il se tourne rapidement vers la peinture et rencontre bientôt ses premiers succès : Léonce Rosenberg, le marchand de Picasso, acquiert par exemple cinq de ses toiles en 1921. En 1927, en réaction probablement à une vaste période créatrice, entre autres, il rompt avec le journalisme pour se consacrer entièrement à la peinture. Après avoir participé à des expositions incluant de plus en plus de ses œuvres (en 1928, par exemple, il présente 13 tableaux à la Biennale de Venise et à une exposition collective à la Galerie de Montparnasse), il trouve un grand soutien auprès de la galeriste parisienne Jeanne Bucher, qui l’aidera à s'intégrer sur le marché américain au début des années 1930 en lui faisant rencontrer Julien Levy.
Pour sa première exposition personnelle chez Bucher en mai 1929 (vif succès, qui lui permettra de vendre plus d’œuvres que celles figurant au catalogue), Campigli peint deux tableaux programmatiques, dont son Autoportrait en sculpteur, aujourd’hui perdu, qui donne à voir le processus artistique de l'artiste depuis ses premiers pas d’étudiant en sculpture.
Si Campigli n’a pas fondamentalement innové dans sa confrontation avec la tradition picturale - convoquée par le buste romain - ni dans l’appropriation et la maîtrise des moyens techniques lui permettant de produire le petit torse posé sur le chevalet, il parvient néanmoins à délivrer une œuvre très personnelle. Ce torse en forme de sablier ou, plus abstraitement, représentant le chiffre 8, correspond à une formule, un symbole universel du corps féminin, sur lequel il basera désormais la conception de chacune de ses œuvres : « il y a ensuite la forme du 8, que j’aime bien, et qui peut devenir un buste en forme de sablier, comme je les aime, ou une tête et un décolleté, et deux 8 peuvent se superposer, celui du haut devient tête et décolleté, celui du bas épaules et hanches » (M. Campigli, cité in L. Bortolon et U. Allemandi, Nuovi Scrupoli, Turin, 1995, p. 142)
Deuxième tableau programmatique de l’exposition, Le Grand Magasin, n’est pas sans rappeler les nombreuses variations sur le thème du torse en forme de sablier et aborde explicitement le processus de découverte de soi du peintre.
Le titre même met en avant des aspects commerciaux, comme le font aussi les autres noms qui furent attribuées à ce tableau du vivant de Campigli et avec son accord (Magasin de modes, L’Emporio et Le Marché). On y voit la façade d’un magasin, dans la partie droite, duquel des vases, des bustes et divers corsets, dont l’un sur un mannequin, sont en vente, tandis que dans la moitié gauche, deux mannequins, ou peut-être des employées ou des clientes, se dirigent dans une direction inconnue.
Cette partie du tableau semble clairement inspirée des vitrines parisiennes photographiées notamment par Eugène Atget et Germaine Krull et leur accumulation d’objets curieux tels que mannequins, corsets, masques, perruques et prothèses, pour lesquels Mac Orlan utilisera le terme de « fantastique social » dans sa préface de l’un des ouvrages de Germaine Krull. Ce terme paraît d’ailleurs bien choisi pour décrire la vie quotidienne dépeinte par Campigli et qui repose sur la logique de production en série du capitalisme moderne, médiée commercialement par les étalages de produits et la publicité, tous deux réarrangés en une image surréaliste par l’artiste.
Dans le tableau de Campigli, c’est la colonne composée de grilles de ferronneries, formant l’axe central du grand magasin, qui équilibre la composition et transforme la scène en rébus, accentuant sa dimension irréelle et intrigante : d’une part parce que les grilles richement décorées contrastent fortement avec l’aménagement plutôt clairsemé et épuré du magasin, d’autre part parce que Campigli donne à la figurine féminine enfermée dans la cage à oiseaux exactement la même taille qu’à celle placée devant la grille de porte, conférant ainsi à cette dernière la charge psychologique d’une prisonnière insolite et évoquant le groupe d’œuvres ultérieures Slavewomen / When Women Want to Fly de Herbert List (1936).
Dans ses écrits autobiographiques, Campigli porte une réflexion profonde et étonnamment franche sur cette relation extrêmement précaire avec les innombrables femmes qu’il a peintes. Ce faisant, il contredit lui-même les lectures de son œuvre qui restent toujours attachées à la gaieté de surface de ses tableaux. Dans ses Scrupoli, il plonge ses racines artistiques dans des fantasmes d’enfance, qui ont occupé son esprit pendant des années : « J’imaginais – je devais avoir environ 8 ans – un magnifique palais oriental où j’étais maharadjah, avec de nombreuses sultanes. [...] Chacune des petites pièces était occupée par une, deux ou trois de mes sultanes ou esclaves, [...] toutes interminablement occupées à leur toilette, à se peigner et se parer [...]. Par les ouvertures de mon alcôve, je pouvais les observer. [...] Ceux qui connaissent mes tableaux reconnaîtront ces scènes. Dans mes fantasmes, mes amantes étaient toujours des prisonnières. Comme dans un musée : derrière une vitre, étiquetées, intouchables, avec un gardien. En fait, je ne peins que des prisonnières. »

A la lumière de ces instincts artistiques primaires, il semble tout à fait naturel que les représentations de corsets occupent une grande place dans l’Œuvre de Campigli ; la forme du corset désignant la femme comme objet du regard masculin.
Alors que ses premières représentations de corsets, datant du milieu des années 1920 et devançant l’iconographie du célèbre Mainbocher Corset (1939) de Horst P. Horst, reprennent certains détails du dos féminin et de l’agencement précis des lacets et des sangles, l’intérêt de Campigli se concentre ensuite sur la forme pure et abstraite.
Ces explorations s'accompagnent alors d'une volonté de l’artiste de représenter le corps des femmes, retourné ou renversé et d’insérer des formes féminines dans un objet, généralement un vase. L’iconographie d’objets traditionnellement associés à la femme - mannequins, bustes, vases, corsets – dont la présente œuvre est manifeste font par ailleurs écho à l’imagerie relative au torse et à l’autoportrait, éléments panachés par l’artiste dans diverses compositions.
Ainsi, dans Le Grand Magasin, en plus des pièces détachées exposées dans la moitié de droite de l’œuvre, Campigli présente dans celle de gauche deux femmes en pied. Celles-ci corsetées, sans bras, ne se différencient que par leur couleur et leur taille. La silhouette est à son tour reprise dans l’escalier de droite qui, par un subtil jeu de miroir, produit une seconde femme, incontestablement difforme, plus grande que nature. En 1941, dans un court essai sur le corset, Campigli le définit à nouveau comme la forme la mieux adaptée à l’archétype anatomique de la femme. Publié en tirage restreint, cet ouvrage (Campigli e i busti, Venise) paraît peu avant que l’éditeur Carlo Cardazzo ouvre sa galerie. Il est illustré presque exclusivement par des vues de détail, notamment la moitié droite du Grand Magasin. Les premières illustrations montrent des figures féminines de différentes phases, de 1929 à 1941, avec des variations de la forme de base du torse, mais aussi des citations de certaines figures, de bustes et de motifs architecturaux du Grand Magasin. En procédant ainsi, Campigli ne révèle pas seulement que le Grand Magasin est un commerce dans lequel il n’y a rien à acheter, excepté lui-même ; mais également que toute la publication est une sorte de catalogue de vente, avec divers exemples de composition et de possibilités de réalisation.
Campigli, dont on a dit qu’il avait un sens de l’humour particulier, invite indirectement le lecteur à imaginer le nouveau tableau qu’il pourrait commander, de préférence en passant par la Galleria del Cavallino qui va prochainement ouvrir ses portes.
Ce principe modulaire et cette esthétique de la permutation, très précoce du point de vue de l’histoire de l’art, peut également être étudié dans la Porteuse d’eau (1931). À partir des composants des formes féminines de base ainsi que des deux vases placés en haut de la composition le Grand Magasin, un contexte inédit est créé via des réarrangements (figure de face/de dos), des déplacements, des changements de couleur et d’arrière-plan, pour le moins paradoxal puisque le seul élément nouveau du décor s’avère être le joug dont est chargé la femme au premier plan.
Jusqu’à la fin de sa vie, l’œuvre de Campigli sera caractérisée par une « puissance de réaction en chaîne des images » presque warholienne (cité in J. Baudrillard, Le crime parfait, Paris 1995, p. 114).
Dans les années 1950, en raison d’importants besoins financiers, Campigli accroît considérablement sa production et crée ses figures féminines de manière sérielle. L’usage d’éléments interchangeables permet une production infinie de compositions nouvelles, et ce, dans tous les formats.
Le collectionneur et marchand Eric Estorick, qui plaça plus de soixante-dix œuvres du peintre dans les collections de Kirk Douglas, de Joseph et Sylvia Slifka, ou encore de Robert Evans, déclara n’avoir jamais rencontré d’homme d’affaires plus habile que Campigli : « Il vendait très bien, il était peut-être l’artiste-homme d’affaires le plus complet que j’aie connu. [...] Il était très commerçant. Il était très correct. Il augmentait ses prix chaque année. Il tenait lui-même des comptes très exacts. » (E. Estorick, mémoires non publiées (transcription), 1981, cité in Estorick Collection of modern Italian art, Rome, 2007, p. 22).
Campigli, semble-t-il, demeurait très attentif aux mécanismes de l’offre et de la demande. À plusieurs reprises, il fut capable d’accroître méthodiquement la désirabilité générale de son travail en employant diverses techniques innovantes, notamment le monotype, lui permettant de proposer des œuvres à des collectionneurs moins fortunés sans baisser ses prix.
Par ailleurs, via l’extension de son activité à un rang international, depuis la France et l’Italie (avec des « têtes de pont » à Londres et aux États-Unis), il sut éviter une inconfortable dépendance envers divers marchands et marchés. Le Grand Magasin est sans doute la seule œuvre dans laquelle l’artiste s’est inspiré de ses activités commerciales et, de surcroît, leur a donné forme.
Both the owners and the inventor of the “Maison de Verre” owned very significant works by the Italian painter Massimo Campigli, appropriate to their profession: With the acquisition of Villa Belvedere from 1930, Pierre Chareau, the ingenious architect, came to own the only complete exterior view of a house of this creative phase in Campigli’s life (today Estorick Collection, London), while Le Grand Magasin, now coming up for auction, with all its female anatomical details, was bought by the couple Annie and Jean Dalsace for their house, which, in addition to private living quarters, also housed Jean Dalsace’s gynaecological practice.
Acquired shortly after its creation, the work was only very rarely exhibited publicly, and even then only in Paris, and hung for decades in various places in the living area of the “Maison de Verre”, first in motif-fitting proximity, opposite a staircase leading to the main bedroom, then in the bedroom itself. Perhaps for reasons of discretion, it also only rarely appeared in publications about the house itself.
The painting, just as much as the interior that housed it, therefore still has an air of mystery.
Le Grand Magasin is considered one of the seminal works in Campigli’s oeuvre. Painted a few months after the painter’s momentous Etruscan experience on the occasion of his visit to the Villa Giulia in Rome, it appears to be influenced at least as much as by ancient art as by the atmosphere in Paris in the 1920s, where Campigli worked on his artistic breakthrough in close personal contact with Alberto Giacometti and his studio neighbour Alexander Calder.
Campigli came to Paris in 1919 as a foreign correspondent for the “Corriere della Sera” and, in addition to his journalistic work, first took courses with the sculptor Antoine Bourdelle at the free academy “Grande Chaumiere”, before soon switching to painting, where he enjoyed rapid initial success. Among other things, Léonce Rosenberg, Picasso’s dealer, acquired five paintings in 1921. In 1927, probably also as a reaction to creative crises, he abandoned journalism to concentrate on painting full-time. After participating in more and more exhibitions – in 1928, for example, he submitted 13 paintings each for the Biennale di Venezia and for a collective exhibition at the Galerie de Montparnasse – he found a great supporter in the Paris gallery owner Jeanne Bucher, who was to help him take a decisive step into the American market a little later in the early 1930s through his contact with Julien Levy.
For his first solo exhibition at Bucher in May 1929 – a huge success that sold more works than were even listed in the catalogue – Campigli created two programmatic paintings, including the now missing Self-Portrait as Sculptor, which addresses the successful artistic process of self-discovery since his beginnings as a student of sculpture.
Campigli portrays himself here as a culturally aware man who, in his confrontation with artistic tradition (represented by the Roman portrait bust) and through the learning and mastery of technical means, has found nothing fundamentally new in the small torso placed on the sculptor’s trestle, but nevertheless has created something that is genuinely his own. This torso in the form of an hourglass or, more abstractly, an 8, corresponds to a formula, a universal sign for the female body, which he will henceforth base the conception of each of his works on: “There is the shape of an 8, which is close to my heart, and it can become an hourglass-shaped bust, which is how I like it, or it can become head and décolleté, and two 8s can overlap, the upper one becoming the head and décolleté, and the lower one the shoulders and hips” (M. Campigli, quoted in L. Bortolon and U. Allemandi, Nuovi Scrupoli, Torino, p. 142)
The second programmatic painting of the exhibition was Le Grand Magasin, which, viewed closely, seamlessly follows the self-portrait through numerous variations of the hourglass-shaped torso and explicitly addresses the painter’s process of economic self-discovery.
Even its title, “Le Grand Magasin” accentuates commercial aspects. This also applies to the other names of the painting which were circulating during his lifetime, and authorised by Campigli (Magasin de modes, L'Emporio and Le Marché). The work depicts the façade of a shop. In the right part, vases, busts and various corsets, one of them on a mannequin, are on sale. In the left half are two models, perhaps employees or customers, on their way to an out of sight upper floor of the shop.
As such, the painting seems clearly inspired by those Parisian shop windows documented especially in photographs by Eugène Atget and Germaine Krull, with their accumulation of curious objects such as mannequins, corsets, masks, wigs and body prostheses, for which Mac Orlan used the term “fantastique social” in a foreword to a book by Germaine Krull. This phrase could be used to describe a metropolitan culture of everyday life created by the mass production logic of modern capitalism and commercially mediated through product displays and advertising, which is rearranged into a surreal image in the artistic gaze.
In Campigli’s painting, it is the lattice column that, as the central axis of the department store, indexes the value and need for security of the assortment vertically. Above all, it gives the scene an air of mystery and intensifies its unreal and irritating dimension: on the one hand because the opulently decorated grids stand in stark contrast to the otherwise rather sparse and uncluttered furnishings of the shop, and on the other hand because the female object enclosed in the birdcage is painted by Campigli in exactly the same size as the woman at the door grille, i.e. life-size, and is thus psychologically charged as a bizarre prisoner reminiscent of Herbert List’s later work complex of Slavewomen / When Women Want to Fly (1936).
Campigli reflected on this extremely precarious relationship with the countless women he painted in his autobiographical texts in depth and with astonishing candour. In doing so, he countered even those readings that always remained committed only to the cheerful surface of his pictures. In the Scrupoli , he traces his artistic roots back to childhood fantasies that preoccupied him for years:

From such artistic primal scenes it is obvious that corset depictions play a major role in Campigli’s work, since the corset form is a pointing out of the woman as the object of the male gaze.
While his first depictions of corsets in the mid-1920s – anticipating the iconography of Horst P. Horst's famous Mainbocher Corset (1939) – still feast in detail on the female back in close-ups and on the precise functioning and depiction of the cords and straps, Campigli’s interest in the corset soon shifts to the pure form.
Temporally, this coincides with attempts to design the women’s bodies in such a way that the respective composition is also plausible when the bodies are turned or upside down or when the woman’s form is repeated in an object - usually a vase. The apparently very satisfying course of these experiments for Campigli triggered a creative drive that culminated in Le Grand Magasin, in which precisely such a world of forms of prefabricated parts is captured: Mannequins, busts, vases, and corsets can all be traced back to the same basic geometric form, which corresponds to that of the torso from the self-portrait and can thus be combined and varied at will.
Thus, in Le Grand Magasin, in addition to the individual parts exhibited on the right half of the picture, Campigli presents on the left half two full-figure, corseted, armless women, differentiated only in colour and size, but otherwise identical, whose basic geometric form is in turn repeated in the staircase on the right side, which, mirrored, would produce another, larger-than-life woman.
In a short essay on the corset in 1941, Campigli once again defines the corset as the form best suited to the anatomical archetype of the woman: The small private print (Campigli e i busti, Venice) was published shortly before the publisher Carlo Cardazzo founded his gallery and is features almost exclusively detailed illustrations, the last of which is the shop window on the right half of Le Grand Magasin. The first illustrations show women from various phases of the work from 1929 to 1941 who vary the scheme of the basic form of the torso, but quotations of individual figures, busts and architectural motifs from Le Grand Magasin can also be seen.
By placing the image of the shop window, of all things, at the end of this cross-section through his work, Campigli not only finally reveals the department store to be a shop in which there is nothing to buy except Campigli, but also the whole publication to be a kind of sales catalogue with various compositional examples and possibilities for concreteness. Campigli, who is said to have had a unique sense of humour, indirectly invites the reader to think about ordering a new painting themself, probably ideally via the Galleria del Cavallino, which will be opening shortly.
This modular principle, a very early aesthetic of permutation in terms of art history, can be studied in Porteuse d'eau, a painting from 1931. From the components of the basic female form and the two upper vases of the assortment of Le Grand Magasin, an in fact entirely new context is created through rearrangements (front / back figure), shifting of position, changes of colour, and exchanging the background, although essentially only the carrying frame of the woman in the foreground has been added as a new set piece.
Until the end of his life, Campigli’s work was characterised by an almost Warholian “power of chain reaction” (J. Baudrillard, Le crime parfait, Paris, 1995, p. 114). In the 1950s, when the need for money was very great for private reasons, the Campigli manufactory became a veritable factory, serially creating women by means of an endlessly recombinable formula and combining them into ever new compositions of every format.
Collector and dealer Eric Estorick, who brokered over seventy works in collections such as those of Kirk Douglas, Joseph and Sylvia Slifka and Robert Evans, said he had never met a more skilful businessman than Campigli: “He sold very well, he was perhaps the most complete businessman/artist I’ve ever known in my experience. [...] He was very entrepreneurial. He was very correct. He raised his prices every year. He kept himself very careful records.” (E. Estorick, unpublished memoirs (transcript), 1981, quoted in Estorick Collection of modern italian art, Roma, 2007, p. 22).
In fact, Campigli paid meticulous attention to supply and demand mechanisms, repeatedly created artificial scarcity, worked with rather unusual techniques such as the monotype in order to be able to offer works for collectors with more modest means without destroying his price level, and avoided too strong a dependence on individual dealers and markets, not least by acting internationally from France and Italy (with footholds in London and the USA).
Le Grand Magasin is the only painting in which Campigli has addressed and captured this business of art that he runs.

Pierre Chareau, le brillant architecte, avait en sa possession, avec la Villa Belvedere de 1930, la seule vue extérieure complète d’une maison peinte par Campigli au cours de cette période (aujourd’hui conservée au sein de la collection Estorick à Londres). Le présent tableau Le Grand Magasin, riche de détails anatomiques féminins, avait quant à lui été acquis par le couple Dalsace pour leur maison, qui abritait également le cabinet gynécologique de Jean Dalsace.
Acquise peu de temps après sa réalisation et accrochée pendant des décennies au sein des espaces de vie de la Maison de verre, l’œuvre n’a que très rarement été exposée au public, et uniquement à Paris. Elle fut d’abord installée en face de l’escalier menant à la chambre principale, auquel son motif faisait écho, puis dans la chambre elle-même. C'est sans doute dans un souci de discrétion que l'œuvre n'apparaît que rarement dans les publications concernant la Maison.
Le tableau, comme la maison qui l’a abrité, garde ainsi encore aujourd’hui quelque chose d’énigmatique.
Tableau absolument crucial dans l’Œuvre de Campigli, Le Grand Magasin, réalisé quelques mois après l’expérience étrusque qui marqua fortement le peintre au cours de sa visite à la Villa Giulia de Rome, est par ailleurs influencé par l’atmosphère qui régnait dans le Paris des années 1920 où Campigli s’efforçait de percer, avec dans son proche entourage Alberto Giacometti et son voisin d’atelier, Alexander Calder.
Campigli arrive à Paris en 1919, comme correspondant du Corriere della Sera. Parallèlement à son travail de journaliste, il suit d’abord des cours avec le sculpteur Antoine Bourdelle, à l’académie libre de la « Grande Chaumière ». En 1927, en réaction probablement à une vaste période créatrice, entre autres, il rompt avec le journalisme pour se consacrer entièrement à la peinture. Après avoir participé à des expositions incluant de plus en plus de ses œuvres (en 1928, par exemple, il présente 13 tableaux à la Biennale de Venise et à une exposition collective à la Galerie de Montparnasse), il trouve un grand soutien auprès de la galeriste parisienne Jeanne Bucher, qui l’aidera à s'intégrer sur le marché américain au début des années 1930 en lui faisant rencontrer Julien Levy.
Pour sa première exposition personnelle chez Bucher en mai 1929 (vif succès, qui lui permettra de vendre plus d’œuvres que celles figurant au catalogue), Campigli peint deux tableaux programmatiques, dont son Autoportrait en sculpteur, aujourd’hui perdu, qui donne à voir le processus artistique de l'artiste depuis ses premiers pas d’étudiant en sculpture.
Si Campigli n’a pas fondamentalement innové dans sa confrontation avec la tradition picturale - convoquée par le buste romain - ni dans l’appropriation et la maîtrise des moyens techniques lui permettant de produire le petit torse posé sur le chevalet, il parvient néanmoins à délivrer une œuvre très personnelle. Ce torse en forme de sablier ou, plus abstraitement, représentant le chiffre 8, correspond à une formule, un symbole universel du corps féminin, sur lequel il basera désormais la conception de chacune de ses œuvres : « il y a ensuite la forme du 8, que j’aime bien, et qui peut devenir un buste en forme de sablier, comme je les aime, ou une tête et un décolleté, et deux 8 peuvent se superposer, celui du haut devient tête et décolleté, celui du bas épaules et hanches » (M. Deuxième tableau programmatique de l’exposition, Le Grand Magasin, n’est pas sans rappeler les nombreuses variations sur le thème du torse en forme de sablier et aborde explicitement le processus de découverte de soi du peintre.
Le titre même met en avant des aspects commerciaux, comme le font aussi les autres noms qui furent attribuées à ce tableau du vivant de Campigli et avec son accord (Magasin de modes, L’Emporio et Le Marché). On y voit la façade d’un magasin, dans la partie droite, duquel des vases, des bustes et divers corsets, dont l’un sur un mannequin, sont en vente, tandis que dans la moitié gauche, deux mannequins, ou peut-être des employées ou des clientes, se dirigent dans une direction inconnue.
Cette partie du tableau semble clairement inspirée des vitrines parisiennes photographiées notamment par Eugène Atget et Germaine Krull et leur accumulation d’objets curieux tels que mannequins, corsets, masques, perruques et prothèses, pour lesquels Mac Orlan utilisera le terme de « fantastique social » dans sa préface de l’un des ouvrages de Germaine Krull. Ce terme paraît d’ailleurs bien choisi pour décrire la vie quotidienne dépeinte par Campigli et qui repose sur la logique de production en série du capitalisme moderne, médiée commercialement par les étalages de produits et la publicité, tous deux réarrangés en une image surréaliste par l’artiste.
Dans le tableau de Campigli, c’est la colonne composée de grilles de ferronneries, formant l’axe central du grand magasin, qui équilibre la composition et transforme la scène en rébus, accentuant sa dimension irréelle et intrigante : d’une part parce que les grilles richement décorées contrastent fortement avec l’aménagement plutôt clairsemé et épuré du magasin, d’autre part parce que Campigli donne à la figurine féminine enfermée dans la cage à oiseaux exactement la même taille qu’à celle placée devant la grille de porte, conférant ainsi à cette dernière la charge psychologique d’une prisonnière insolite et évoquant le groupe d’œuvres ultérieures Slavewomen / When Women Want to Fly de Herbert List (1936).
Dans ses écrits autobiographiques, Campigli porte une réflexion profonde et étonnamment franche sur cette relation extrêmement précaire avec les innombrables femmes qu’il a peintes. Ce faisant, il contredit lui-même les lectures de son œuvre qui restent toujours attachées à la gaieté de surface de ses tableaux. Dans ses Scrupoli, il plonge ses racines artistiques dans des fantasmes d’enfance, qui ont occupé son esprit pendant des années : « J’imaginais – je devais avoir environ 8 ans – un magnifique palais oriental où j’étais maharadjah, avec de nombreuses sultanes. [...] Chacune des petites pièces était occupée par une, deux ou trois de mes sultanes ou esclaves, [...] toutes interminablement occupées à leur toilette, à se peigner et se parer [...]. Par les ouvertures de mon alcôve, je pouvais les observer. [...] Ceux qui connaissent mes tableaux reconnaîtront ces scènes. Dans mes fantasmes, mes amantes étaient toujours des prisonnières. Comme dans un musée : derrière une vitre, étiquetées, intouchables, avec un gardien. En fait, je ne peins que des prisonnières. »

A la lumière de ces instincts artistiques primaires, il semble tout à fait naturel que les représentations de corsets occupent une grande place dans l’Œuvre de Campigli ; la forme du corset désignant la femme comme objet du regard masculin.

L’iconographie d’objets traditionnellement associés à la femme - mannequins, bustes, vases, corsets – dont la présente œuvre est manifeste font par ailleurs écho à l’imagerie relative au torse et à l’autoportrait, éléments panachés par l’artiste dans diverses compositions.
Ainsi, dans Le Grand Magasin, en plus des pièces détachées exposées dans la moitié de droite de l’œuvre, Campigli présente dans celle de gauche deux femmes en pied. Celles-ci corsetées, sans bras, ne se différencient que par leur couleur et leur taille. La silhouette est à son tour reprise dans l’escalier de droite qui, par un subtil jeu de miroir, produit une seconde femme, incontestablement difforme, plus grande que nature. En 1941, dans un court essai sur le corset, Campigli le définit à nouveau comme la forme la mieux adaptée à l’archétype anatomique de la femme. Publié en tirage restreint, cet ouvrage (Campigli e i busti, Venise) paraît peu avant que l’éditeur Carlo Cardazzo ouvre sa galerie. Par ailleurs, via l’extension de son activité à un rang international, depuis la France et l’Italie (avec des « têtes de pont » à Londres et aux États-Unis), il sut éviter une inconfortable dépendance envers divers marchands et marchés. Le Grand Magasin est sans doute la seule œuvre dans laquelle l’artiste s’est inspiré de ses activités commerciales et, de surcroît, leur a donné forme.
Both the owners and the inventor of the “Maison de Verre” owned very significant works by the Italian painter Massimo Campigli, appropriate to their profession: With the acquisition of Villa Belvedere from 1930, Pierre Chareau, the ingenious architect, came to own the only complete exterior view of a house of this creative phase in Campigli’s life (today Estorick Collection, London), while Le Grand Magasin, now coming up for auction, with all its female anatomical details, was bought by the couple Annie and Jean Dalsace for their house, which, in addition to private living quarters, also housed Jean Dalsace’s gynaecological practice.

The painting, just as much as the interior that housed it, therefore still has an air of mystery.
Le Grand Magasin is considered one of the seminal works in Campigli’s oeuvre. Painted a few months after the painter’s momentous Etruscan experience on the occasion of his visit to the Villa Giulia in Rome, it appears to be influenced at least as much as by ancient art as by the atmosphere in Paris in the 1920s, where Campigli worked on his artistic breakthrough in close personal contact with Alberto Giacometti and his studio neighbour Alexander Calder.
Campigli came to Paris in 1919 as a foreign correspondent for the “Corriere della Sera” and, in addition to his journalistic work, first took courses with the sculptor Antoine Bourdelle at the free academy “Grande Chaumiere”, before soon switching to painting, where he enjoyed rapid initial success. Among other things, Léonce Rosenberg, Picasso’s dealer, acquired five paintings in 1921. In 1927, probably also as a reaction to creative crises, he abandoned journalism to concentrate on painting full-time. After participating in more and more exhibitions – in 1928, for example, he submitted 13 paintings each for the Biennale di Venezia and for a collective exhibition at the Galerie de Montparnasse – he found a great supporter in the Paris gallery owner Jeanne Bucher, who was to help him take a decisive step into the American market a little later in the early 1930s through his contact with Julien Levy.
For his first solo exhibition at Bucher in May 1929 – a huge success that sold more works than were even listed in the catalogue – Campigli created two programmatic paintings, including the now missing Self-Portrait as Sculptor, which addresses the successful artistic process of self-discovery since his beginnings as a student of sculpture.
Campigli portrays himself here as a culturally aware man who, in his confrontation with artistic tradition (represented by the Roman portrait bust) and through the learning and mastery of technical means, has found nothing fundamentally new in the small torso placed on the sculptor’s trestle, but nevertheless has created something that is genuinely his own. This torso in the form of an hourglass or, more abstractly, an 8, corresponds to a formula, a universal sign for the female body, which he will henceforth base the conception of each of his works on: “There is the shape of an 8, which is close to my heart, and it can become an hourglass-shaped bust, which is how I like it, or it can become head and décolleté, and two 8s can overlap, the upper one becoming the head and décolleté, and the lower one the shoulders and hips” (M. The second programmatic painting of the exhibition was Le Grand Magasin, which, viewed closely, seamlessly follows the self-portrait through numerous variations of the hourglass-shaped torso and explicitly addresses the painter’s process of economic self-discovery.
Even its title, “Le Grand Magasin” accentuates commercial aspects. This also applies to the other names of the painting which were circulating during his lifetime, and authorised by Campigli (Magasin de modes, L'Emporio and Le Marché). The work depicts the façade of a shop. In the right part, vases, busts and various corsets, one of them on a mannequin, are on sale. In the left half are two models, perhaps employees or customers, on their way to an out of sight upper floor of the shop.
As such, the painting seems clearly inspired by those Parisian shop windows documented especially in photographs by Eugène Atget and Germaine Krull, with their accumulation of curious objects such as mannequins, corsets, masks, wigs and body prostheses, for which Mac Orlan used the term “fantastique social” in a foreword to a book by Germaine Krull. This phrase could be used to describe a metropolitan culture of everyday life created by the mass production logic of modern capitalism and commercially mediated through product displays and advertising, which is rearranged into a surreal image in the artistic gaze.
In Campigli’s painting, it is the lattice column that, as the central axis of the department store, indexes the value and need for security of the assortment vertically. Above all, it gives the scene an air of mystery and intensifies its unreal and irritating dimension: on the one hand because the opulently decorated grids stand in stark contrast to the otherwise rather sparse and uncluttered furnishings of the shop, and on the other hand because the female object enclosed in the birdcage is painted by Campigli in exactly the same size as the woman at the door grille, i.e. life-size, and is thus psychologically charged as a bizarre prisoner reminiscent of Herbert List’s later work complex of Slavewomen / When Women Want to Fly (1936).

Until the end of his life, Campigli’s work was characterised by an almost Warholian “power of chain reaction” (J. Baudrillard, Le crime parfait, Paris, 1995, p. 114). In the 1950s, when the need for money was very great for private reasons, the Campigli manufactory became a veritable factory, serially creating women by means of an endlessly recombinable formula and combining them into ever new compositions of every format.
Collector and dealer Eric Estorick, who brokered over seventy works in collections such as those of Kirk Douglas, Joseph and Sylvia Slifka and Robert Evans, said he had never met a more skilful businessman than Campigli: “He sold very well, he was perhaps the most complete businessman/artist I’ve ever known in my experience. [...] He was very entrepreneurial. He was very correct. He raised his prices every year. He kept himself very careful records.” (E. In fact, Campigli paid meticulous attention to supply and demand mechanisms, repeatedly created artificial scarcity, worked with rather unusual techniques such as the monotype in order to be able to offer works for collectors with more modest means without destroying his price level, and avoided too strong a dependence on individual dealers and markets, not least by acting internationally from France and Italy (with footholds in London and the USA).
Le Grand Magasin is the only painting in which Campigli has addressed and captured this business of art that he runs.
