Note du spécialiste
The present watch is a fine example of a so-called "Puritan" watch, referring to the simplicity of its appearance, supposedly in character with the Puritan austerity. It is in line with the strict code of behavior enforced by the Calvinist Oliver Cromwell in 17th century England, forbidding any open display of wealth.
The silver dial is easy to read and the double-ended hour hand allows it to be moved with the fingers easily and without damages.
The watchmaker Ralph Ash(e), London, c1656, is listed in Brian Loomes Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World, Volume 2.
