Note du spécialiste

According to the Archives of Vacheron Constantin, the present pendant watch was manufactured in 1907.

This extremely fine and rare, possibly unique timepiece is distinguished by the finely painted enamel miniature depicting the Alba Madonna after Raphael. Certainly made to special order, the case is furthermore decorated with a chased fleur-de-lis pattern, the silver dial with engraved scroll and foliage center stands out by the unusual use of royal blue indexes and signature. The watch is sold with an associated gold chain, the rectangular gold panels with dark translucent blue enamel over engine-turned background joined by diamond-set links.

The original “Alba Madonna” is a « tondo » (circular) oil on wood transferred to canvas painting by the Italian High Renaissance artist Raphael, c1510, depicting Mary, Jesus and John the Baptist in a typical Italian countryside. The work derives its name from the collection of the Dukes of Alba in Spain to whom it belonged until 1836, when it was sold to Nicholas I of Russia and became one of the highlights of the Imperial Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg. Since 1937 it is in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., Accession No. 1937.1.24 (see illustration).

Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino (1483-1520), known as Raphael, was an Italian painter and architect of the High Renaissance. His work is admired for its clarity of form, ease of composition, and visual achievement of the Neoplatonic ideal of human grandeur
