Specialist note

The present "Cadran Deployant" or "Folding Shutter Dial" desk clock is an attractive example of these rare timepieces particularly en vogue during the Art Deco period.

The name is derived from the hinged shutters, opened to reveal the dial to the front and the winding and hand-setting mechanisms to the back.

The appeal of the present desk clock is enhanced by its very good overall condition and the presence of the original presentation box.

Examples of Cartier's "Cadran Deployant" clocks are illustrated in J. Rudoe, Cartier, 1900-1939, British Museum Press, London, 1997, p. 132, and in F. Chaille & F. Cologni, The Cartier Collection: Timepieces, Flammarion, Paris, 2006, p. 295.
