Note du spécialiste

George Keyes, who had previously only known this painting from an old black-and-white photograph, has suggested this painting relates to a small number of works datable to the second half of the 1630s and early 1640s (written communication, 13 January 2021). Characteristic of these paintings is the luminous sky and pattern of thin, transparent clouds. Particularly close comparisons can be drawn with a painting dated 1638 as well as a large panorama in the Hannema-de Stuers collection in Heino (see Keyes, op. cit., nos. P21 and P25). Keyes further suggests the staffage may be by Pieter Post (loc. cit.).

We are grateful to Dr. George Keyes for his assistance with this entry and for endorsing the attribution of the painting on the basis of a high resolution image.
