A PAIR OF GEORGE III MAHOGANY ARMCHAIRS
IN THE MANNER OF ROBERT MANWARING, CIRCA 1770
Each with pierced trellis splat above a solid seat, with chamfered legs ending in casters

Note du spécialiste

The chair's trellis-fretted and quatrefoil-pierced back relates to a 'Gothick' pattern in R. Manwaring's The Chair-maker's Friend, 1765 (pl. 13). A similar example in the Victoria and Albert Museum is illustrated in A. Coleridge, Chippendale Furniture, New York, 1968, fig. 135. Two examples of very similar design to the present lot, with tapering legs and square block feet, are illustrated in A. Coleridge, Chippendale Furniture, London, 1968, one from the Victoria and Albert Museum, fig. 135 and one from the collection of the Earl of Mansfield at Scone Palace, fig. 137.
