Le 1er janvier 1941, Marcel Duchamp, qui s’était déjà forgé une réputation dans le milieu artistique en tant que peintre qui abandonne les arts pour jouer aux échecs, annonce, à la surprise générale, la création d’une nouvelle œuvre. En effet, Marcel Duchamp a travaillé secrètement à l’assemblage des matériaux pour sa Boîte-en-valise pendant près de cinq ans avant la présentation de ses vingt premières valises édition de luxe. Avec ses cadres amovibles présentant des reproductions de l’artiste telles que Nu descendant l'escalier, Le grand verre, Neuf moules mâlic et ses ready-mades miniatures suspendus dans une «galerie» verticale, la Boîte ressemble à un musée portatif qui présente un extrait du travail de l’artiste avant 1940.
Plus qu’une simple rétrospective en miniature de la production de l’artiste existante jusqu’à cette date, la Boîte-en-valise pourrait être considérée comme un ready-made en soi. En tant que telle, elle est représentative d’un changement drastique dans la philosophie de l’artiste: ayant jusque-là établi qu’il ne souhaitait reproduire aucune forme d’art «acceptée», pas même la sienne, avec les Valises, Duchamp change complètement de discours. Il crée ici des copies d’objets qu’il avait réalisés auparavant. Présentés dans des constructions soigneusement conditionnées et finement conçues, ces objets ressemblent à des «dispositifs» d’art manufacturés, qui rappellent la circularité de l’art créé à partir d’objets déjà désignés comme artistiques.

Indeed Duchamp had been quietly working on the assembly of material for his Boîte-en-Valise for nearly five years prior to the release of the first twenty deluxe editioned examples. With it's pull-out standing frames displaying reproductions of the artist's Nu descendant l'escalier, Le grand verre, Neuf moules mâlic and its diminutive Readymades hung in a vertical “gallery”, the Boîte may be likened to a portable museum presenting the artist's own summary of his work prior to 1940.
More than a simple retrospective in miniature of the artist's production available to date, the Boîte- en-Valise could be considered as a Readymade in its own right. As such, it represents an important shift in the artist's philosophy: having consciously set out to repeat neither his own nor any other form of “accepted” art, the Valises show Duchamp exactly reversing his prior stance: here he has deliberately set out to create hand-crafted copies of objects which he had already made. Presented in their neatly packaged and intricately conceived constructions, they look like manufactured art “devices”, thereby coming full circle as art fashioned out of something already designated as art.

If the Artist's Resale Right Regulations 2006 apply to this lot, the buyer also agrees to pay us an amount equal to the resale royalty provided for in those Regulations, and we undertake to the buyer to pay such amount to the artist's collection agent.
