Note du spécialiste

Prado manuscript: ‘They fleece him while they strip off his skin. It is his own fault to put himself in the hands of such a barber.’

The Madrid Biblioteca Nacional text is even more specific: ‘A courtesan shaves her blockhead lover who is driveling and (at the same time) she has taken from him his last cent’ (Maravedi, which was an old Spanish coin of the smallest value worth about one sixth of a cent). Again there is here an attack against the privileged classes, one of whom in this case, puts himself in the hands of ‘such a barber’. This is the same theme as Caprichos 19 and 20 in which men of the privileged classes are seen as acting imprudently or unwisely.’
