GIORGIO GHISI (1520-1582) AFTER POLIDORO DA CARAVAGGIO (CIRCA 1500 - 1536/37)
Caius Marius in Prison
engraving, circa 1560s, on laid paper, without watermark, a fine, rich impression of the first state (of three), printing with many small impurities in the plate and surface tone toward the sheet edges
Plate 206 x 280 mm.
Sheet 215 x 287 mm.

Note du spécialiste

The print is closely related to a drawing in the Fondation Custodia, Paris (inv. no. 9569). Polidoro had presumably developed the composition for a chiaroscuro fresco on the facade of an unidentified palazzo in Rome. Polidoro da Caravaggio was foremost known for his facade decorations, the vast majority of which are lost and only known from Vasari's descriptions, other documentary evidence, and copies.
