Omen of the future Greatness of Augustus
engraving, circa 1536-74, on laid paper, watermark Trimount in Quatrefoil (similar to Briquet 11915), a fine impression, printing with strong horizontal wiping marks across the entire subject
Sheet 202 x 267 mm.

Fürst zu Fürstenberg, Donaueschingen, Germany (see Lugt 995); by repute and without mark.
Sotheby's, London, 9 December 1982, lot 518 (£418).
Eric G. Stanley (1923-2018), Oxford; acquired at the above sale (through Artemis Fine Arts, London).

Note du spécialiste

The present impression shows the same, very pronounced wiping marks as the Cumberland impression (inv. no. H,6.2) in the British Museum, London.
The engraving is related to a drawing by Giulio Romano in the Royal Collection, Windsor (inv. no. 990308), which however only shows the right half of the subject. The drawing is a study for a lost panel painted by Giulio's workshop for the Camerino dei Cesari in the Palazzo Ducale, Mantua.
