A PAIR OF MONUMENTAL ORMOLU AND FROSTED GLASS LANTERNS

This model for this lantern is based off the original early 20th century design for the Centro Naval, Buenos Aires. The still extent Belle Epoque building was conceived by the architect Gastón Mallet and intended as a Naval Centre for the Officers of the Argentine Navy, a Naval Library, and a Naval Museum. The work began in 1911 and was completed by 1914 with detailed finishings to match the elaborate exterior. Perhaps one of the most celebrated aspects of the building are iron and gilt-bronze, which were designed by Luis Tiberti and cast in the Buenos Aires Naval Arsenal from the old cannons following the wars of Independence. Placed on the central corner of Florida and Avenue Cordoba, the door opens to grand entry way where the original lantern still hangs in pride of place.
