« Gigi », de son vrai nom Irmingard Emma Antonia Richter, est née en 1922 dans une petite bourgade de la région de Munich. Son père, Georg Martin Richter, était un historien de l’art, éditeur et mécène reconnu. Il comptait parmi ses amis l’écrivain Thomas Mann, qui était aussi le parrain de Gigi ; celui-ci emprunta d'ailleurs le nom de sa filleule dans un de ses romans, Wälsungenblut, paru en 1921. En 1939, fuyant la guerre, les Richter quittèrent l’Angleterre où ils s’étaient installés en 1929 pour se réfugier aux États-Unis. Gigi étudia dans un premier temps les beaux-arts à New York avant de se former à la conservation d’œuvres d’art au Brooklyn Museum of Art et au Fogg Art Museum de l’université d'Harvard. Ce fut probablement là qu’elle rencontra le peintre Wolfgang Paalen et son épouse Alice Rahon, ainsi que l’artiste suisse Sonia Sekula. Elle ne retourna au Royaume-Uni qu’en 1945, où elle fit la connaissance d’Henry Moore, qui lui loua son appartement à Londres. Elle poursuivit son activité de restauratrice jusqu’en 1960, avant de changer radicalement de carrière et se convertir à la botanique.

J’ai lu ta lettre avec plaisir, mais je crains que tu ne sois déjà rentrée en Angleterre lorsque nous arriverons à New York (probablement en avril). Tu trouveras ci-joint un mot de présentation à l’intention d’Henry Moore - si tu veux quelque chose de plus « élaboré », fais-le moi savoir, et je t’en écrirai un autre. Félicitations pour les dessins que tu as acquis de lui - tu as bien raison quant à nos sentiments à son égard, c’est un homme tout à fait merveilleux. J’aimerais également te rédiger une lettre de recommandation pour Roland Penrose (si jamais tu souhaites faire sa connaissance), bien que j’ignore le genre de personnage qu’il est devenu entre-temps, mais cela vaudrait peut-être la peine d’essayer. Dis-moi si tu aimerais que je lui adresse un courrier. C’est Arthur Koestler que tu ferais bien de rencontrer. Connais-tu ses livres ? Sinon je te conseille de lire sans plus attendre Le Zéro et l’Infini et Le Yogi et le commissaire. Je ne connais pas Koestler personnellement mais je pense que c’est quelqu’un de remarquable ; il a débuté en journaliste plutôt lambda (et son premier bouquin laisse à désirer) mais il a fini par devenir un écrivain brillant, et l’un des esprits les plus éclairés de notre temps. Ne commence pas par sa Croisade sans croix, qui n’est franchement pas extraordinaire et un peu confus.
Je n’ai pas bien compris ce que tu entends par Peter, les orchidées et M. Addison - dis-m’en davantage si tu peux.
J’imagine que tu as trouvé en Anaïs Nin une âme fraternelle avec laquelle maudire ce pays que tu n’aimes décidément pas… Charles Gicors (?) est mon alter-ego, je me suis beaucoup amusé avec ce pseudonyme. L’ouvrage en question sera une espèce de livre « secret » sur le Mexique, d’une profondeur telle qu’il en sera transparent et passera totalement inaperçu.
Je n’ai pas vu Leonora Carrington depuis un certain temps, elle a publié un petit texte dans Circle. J’ai entendu dire que son livre est vraiment très bien ; je ne sais pas où il sera publié (comme je réponds soigneusement à toutes tes questions !).
Nierendorf : c’est bien le seul mécène auquel j’aie eu affaire qui comprenne quoi que ce soit à la peinture et y voue aussi un intérêt sincère, et pour qui l’argent n’est pas une fin mais simplement un moyen. Je doute qu’il soit si phallocrate que cela ; il semblerait qu’il ait éveillé de brûlantes passions auprès de femmes aussi belles que réputées… Je t’encourage à ne pas rester sur cette première impression défavorable et de lui donner une seconde chance, c’est vraiment quelqu’un de cultivé et de charmant.
Un récit sur la restauration pourrait être très original, j’espère que tu l’écriras.
Je ne peux pas trop en vouloir à Sonia4 ; pendant son séjour à New York, Alice a elle aussi eu le sentiment que tu ne l’appréciais pas tellement.

Ce que j’ai appris entre-temps au sujet de Roland Penrose ne me donne finalement aucune envie de lui écrire.
Avec toi, toi, je me sens toujours particulièrement complexé par mon mauvais anglais.

J’ai oublié de te répondre au sujet de Dyn : le prochain numéro, dont la sortie a été très retardée, sera un grand double-numéro qui paraîtra à l’occasion d’une série d’expositions sur la nouvelle conception de l’espace dans les arts plastiques. I do not think, he is only a man’s man, it seems he has inspired violent passions to beautiful and celebrated women… I would suggest, you should not remain on one unfavourable impression and try once more, he is really a most cultivated and charming person.
A story about restoring could be very original; I hope you will write it.
I cannot blame Sonia too much; Alice too, during her stay in New York, got the impression that you did not care for her very much.
