Specialist note

Study for State II “Elegy No. 100” was originally painted as a study for Elegy to the Spanish Republic No. 100, currently in the collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, as well as Elegy to the Spanish Republic No. 126, currently in the collection of the University of Iowa Museum of Art. There is an archival photograph of Motherwell's Greenwich, Connecticut studio from circa 1975 in which our work is installed adjacent to Elegy to the Spanish Republic No. 100 in progress.
