Deposition Model No.10 - Water Cooler was first exhibited at the Herald Street Gallery in the solo exhibition Bureau in 2014. This present lot derives from a body of work that comprised what Darbyshire refers to as 'ultimate symbols'. Alongside the water cooler which the artist had adopted as the ultimate symbol of purity, stood the Farnese Hercules (power); a radiator (domesticity); and a robot (technology).

The layered fabrication process relates to the 3D printing method known as additive printing. This process sees each layer of an object built up by a step-by-step process in profiles. Usually carried out by a machine, here, Darbyshire exploits himself as the 'human printer'- using the same code, only this time interpreted by hand. He describes the outcome as a shakier, imperfect, but more expressive form of which he hopes reveals a unity between the human and machine, transcending both to instil more accuracy than a sculptor might ordinarily achieve.

"I feel honoured to be able to support such a fantastic cause as Maggie's, and have been a longstanding admirer of their incredible work...and the outstanding environments within which they conduct it!"- Matthew Darbyshire, 2020
