Adeline de Monseignat's works, whether sculpture, drawing or video, are surreal in nature. In "Moonkissed" her creatures are gently kissed by the moonlight and enter into "a window of quiet intimacy."
Alan Reid reacted specifically to Il Bisonte's hay days when artists such as Henry Moore and Pablo Picasso created etchings there. Starting with the question of ‘What would an American create in Florence in the 30s, 40s and 50s?’, Alan situated his aesthetic between the mass-produced covers of Vogue and artist, Ben Shawn. The drawn zebra in this present work is reminiscent of A.E. Marty's famous Vogue cover.
Celia Hempton's etching was inspired a personal visit to the Stromboli volcano.
Hugo Wilson's asserts that there is "a continued investigation into the human manifestation of faith".
'In this work, I have re-worked the terracotta sculpture by Renaissance artist Rustici depicting a mythological battle scene, currently on view at Bargello National Museum in Florence. I have removed the obvious narrative sections from the sculpture, creating a new generic symbol.'
As an early initiate to graffiti culture, Jay One Ramier formed the infamous “Bad Boys Crew” in 1982. As a rising star to the underground graffiti scene throughout the 80’s, Jay One Raimer was at the heart of the growing hip pop culture in Paris – from moonwalking with famous-to-be artists and musicians in the ghetto to witnessing Paco Rabanne opening his doors to rappers, b-boys and poppers. Stemming from this culture and the aesthetic of graffiti tagging, Jay One Raimer's works are equal to visual poetry – an image is always accompanied by a lyrical sentence. At the same time minimal and colourful, the works are imbued with the spirit of the hip hop decade – free and sharp to the point
Kate Groobey's strangely contorted bodies suggest movement and exaggerated flexibility. If their poses seem impossible, it’s because they are: these bodies have been cut up, reassembled and repainted several times. For this present print, Kate was inspired by the Tuscan surroundings: the image of the Italian farmer, stood infront of wavering Cyprus trees.
Both personal and collective memories, which by their nature are obscured or distorted by time are Kon Trubkovich’s primary source for his artistic practice. This enigmatic portrait he made at Il Bisonte has a dream-like quality.
Lionel Esteve is a French artist whose work deals with the boundaries of human perception and connection between man and nature. This delicate etching, produced for Villa Lena Foundation, reflects the intimacy with nature that can be experienced there.
After studying economics, Moataz Nasr decided to change direction and take a studio in Old Cairo. As a self-taught artist, Nasr gained local recognition before breaking into the international art scene in 2001, notably winning the Grand Prix at the 8th International Cairo Biennial. Since, he has participated in large international gatherings such as the Venice, Seoul, Sao Paulo, Bogotà Biennials, alongside prestigious contemporary art venues. Today, he is considered one of the greatest representatives of pan-Arab contemporary art. Revealing complex cultural processes within the Islamic world, his work surpasses idiosyncrasies and geographical limits whilst highlighting the anxieties and turbulence of Africa.
Nika Neelova is a Russian born, London based artist working with sculpture and installation. Her work primarily investigates themes of time and loss. When she executed this present etching at Il Bisonte, it was her first time transitioning from working with three-dimensional objects toward the two-dimensional plane.
Il Bisonte, where all these Villa Lena Foundation editions were printed, is a print-workshop for graphic arts founded in Florence in 1959 by Maria Luigia Guaita. Many artists, both Italian and non, accepted the invitation to work at Il Bisonte, including members of the Futurist movement: Gino Severini, Carlo Carrà, Alberto Magnelli, and such international stars as Pablo Picasso, Jacques Lipchitz, Helen Chadwick, Alexander Calder and Henry Moore. In 1983, Il Bisonte became a non-profit cultural centre and opened an international school, with a primary focus to preserve the teaching and printing of traditional engraving techniques.
