The ref. 5004 offered here for sale is one of the exceedingly rare examples of the model in white gold featuring an Extract-confirmed black dial with applied white gold Arabic numerals as opposed to the better known baton indexes.
The standard baton dial, code 5004-015, originally scheduled was exchanged upon special request of the first owner against the present Arabic numerals version when he took possession of his new acquisition in Patek Philippe's prestigious Salons de Genève on 10 December 2009, as confirmed by the Extract from the Archives.
This highly attractive timepiece is furthermore in extremely well preserved condition, fresh to the market and sold with the full set of accessories.
Reference 5004
Reference 5004, a modern classic, was launched in 1994 with a production of approximately 12 pieces per year. Now discontinued, the model has increased in desirability due to its subtle design and pedigree. Deriving its features from the reference 3970, which descends from the legendary and iconic reference 2499, ref. 5004 enters the Patek Philippe family of Grand Complications through its added and highly complex split seconds function.
It was replaced by two other split seconds chronograph models, both in platinum cases: the cushion-shaped reference 5951 released in 2010 with in-house calibre CHR 27-525 PS Q, and reference 5204, released in March 2012 at the Basel Fair with in-house calibre CHR 29-535 PS Q.
Reference 5004 is illustrated in Patek Philippe Wristwatches by Martin Huber & Alan Banbery, second edition, p. 312.
