Specialist note
The squared tripod supports with Greek key ornament to the feet on the present lot are related to the supports of a torchère designed by Robert Adam for the Drawing-room at Osterley Park, Middlesex (J. Bourne and V. Brett, Lighting in the Domestic Interior, Renaissance to Art Nouveau, London, 1991, p. 101, fig. 319). They also related to a pair of torchères possibly from the collection of William Randolph Hearst, sold Sotheby's, New York, 9 June 1990, lot 199 and a pair sold by Ronald Phillips Ltd., Christie's, South Kensington, 2 July 2014, lot 71.
