A FRENCH ORMOLU-MOUNTED KINGWOOD AND TULIPWOOD PARQUETRY WRITING DESK
BY LOUIS MAJORELLE, NANCY, CIRCA 1880/90
The rectangular top with serpentine front edge, inset with a brown leather writing surface, the shaped apron centred by a frieze drawer flanked to each side by a deep drawer, all with loop handles, the reverse and sides with framed cube-parquetry reserves filled with foliate mounts, the cabriole legs headed by rocaille clasps running to scroll sabots, incised to the reverse of the side mounts 'LM'
32 in. (81 cm.) high; 51 in. (130 cm.) wide; 26 in. (66 cm.) deep

Specialist note


The ‘LM’ mark to the reverse of the ormolu mounts gives an attribution to Louis Majorelle’s workshop in Nancy which during the 1880s produced Rococo Revival furniture in an exuberant interpretation of the Louis XV style. Please see the following lot for a note on Louis Majorelle.
