CIRCA 1817-20, BLUE SCEPTRE MARKS TO BOTH, RED CIRCLE MARK AND IMPRESSED 24 TO STAND, RED DASH, INCISED 30 AND OTHER INCISED MARKS TO TRAY
The centre painted with a rectangular panel of gamebirds in a landscape, within gilt scrolls and palmettes, the gilt border tooled with foliate scrolls issuing from fleur de lys, the rectangular plinth stand with canted corners and gilt recumbent lions, the oval tray mounted on a foliate scroll ormolu support
The tray 18 3/8 in. (46.6 cm.) wide

Specialist note

This oval tray and stand, with its distinctive lion supports, is closely related to those from the 'Prussian Service' which was commissioned by Wilhelm III King of Prussia from the Royal Berlin manufactory in circa 1817-19 as a gift to Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington (d. 1852) in gratitude for his part in the defeat of Napoleon. The etched gilt border closely resembles those of the Duke's service, and the stand, of a form designed at Berlin for elaborate tureens, is the same model as those used for the Duke's tureen-stands.
