Franciscans in Jalisco and Northern Mexico
Franciscans, 1831
MEXICO, FRANCISCAN FRIARS – In nomine D. N. Jesu-Christi. Amen. Haec est tabula congregationis capitularis intermediae hujus almae provinciae divi Jacobi de Xalisco. Fratrum minorum regularis observantiae S.P.N.S. Guadalajara: Dionisio Rodriguez, 1831.

Rare printed document, with manuscript additions, showing the Franciscan churches, convents and missions in northern Mexico under the jurisdiction of Jalisco. Latin text, with the names of the friars serving at each church, convent and mission added in manuscript after their printed titles and positions. More than 50 names are added in ink, making this a full listing of the friars serving on the northern Mexican frontier at the time. The document includes convents and friars in the cities of Guadalajara, Santa Anita, Sayula, Tepic, Saltillo, Cocula, and Etzatlán. Seven missions are listed for Nayarit; in Sonora 11 Indian mission churches are listed, including Cucurpe, Seris del Pitic, Bacoachi, Gusabas, etc.; and there are ten Tarahumara Indian missions, including Satebo, Baborigame, Chinipas, etc. The document is signed at the end with eight rubrics of Church authorities, their names and titles appearing in type, and the province seal is pasted in. Not in Palau & Dulcet or Sabin; no copies in WorldCat.

Folio (299 x 206mm). 8 pages (light toning). 19th century marbled paper wrappers.
