“Nighthawks felt to me much like an ethereal and magnetic pull towards the blissful timelessness one feels when entering the midnight hours. I felt this painting, in some ways, could be understood just the same with or without the people, which reminded me of how Marcel Duchamp, I was told once, said there was no difference between the answers 'yes' and 'no'. This freedom, I wanted to share by removing all the late nighters in Nighthawks.”
