La présente œuvre est issue d'une série de dessins surréalistes intitulée Cadavre exquis, du nom du fameux procédé selon lequel les artistes s'amusaient à dessiner chacun leur tour sur une même feuille, en respectant ce principe défini par le Dictionnaire abrégé du surréalisme de 1938 : « jeu qui consiste à faire composer une phrase, ou un dessin, par plusieurs personnes sans qu'aucune d'elles ne puisse tenir compte de la collaboration ou des collaborations précédentes » (cité in Dalí, cat. exp., Palazzo Grassi, Venise et The Philadelphia Museum of Art, 2004-2005, p. 184). André Breton, Yves Tanguy ou le poète Jacques Prévert étaient particulièrement friands.

These drawings emerged from a game that the artists would play in which they would take turns working on an image as described in the 1938 Dictionnaire Abrégé du Surréalisme: "Game of folded paper that consists in having a sentence or a drawing composed by several persons, each ignorant of the preceding collaboration" (quoted in Dalí, exh. cat., Palazzo Grassi, Venice and The Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia, 2004, p. 184). André Breton, Yves Tanguy or the poet Jacques Prevert were particularly keen on executing written or drawn cadavres exquis.
