Après un séjour à Mont-Roig à l’été 1936, Joan Miró rentre à Paris à l’automne pour y déposer les œuvres qui seront présentées lors de l’exposition monographique qui lui est consacrée à la galerie Pierre Matisse à New York. Dans les mois qui suivent ce retour, les conflits de la guerre civile espagnole l’empêchent de revenir dans sa Catalogne natale et le contraignent à rester à Paris jusqu’en 1941. Aussi est-ce de loin que le peintre assiste aux horreurs qui meurtrissent son pays et le bouleversent profondément de 1936 à 1939. Fin avril 1937, Miró reçoit du gouvernement républicain espagnol la commande de réaliser – au même titre que Pablo Picasso et d’autres artistes – une œuvre murale pour le pavillon espagnol lors de l’Exposition Universelle de la même année. Tandis que Picasso s’attèle à ce qui deviendra l’une des fresques historiques les plus retentissantes des derniers siècles, avec l’exécution de Guernica entre le 1er mai et le 4 juin, Miró achève Le Faucheur (fig. 1), paysan catalan aux traits vifs et torturés dont semble s’échapper un cri de détresse universel, et dont les 6 panneaux constitutifs ont aujourd’hui disparu.
Les personnages flottants et cellulaires du présent dessin ne sont, quant à eux, pas sans évoquer la fragilité des civils face aux atrocités du conflit. Dans ce qui semble être une fuite vers le bord gauche de la feuille, et tandis que la couleur a quitté la composition pour être reléguée en périphérie, Miró poursuit son exploration des monstres grotesques apparus dès 1934. Ici, la force expressive du dessin provient du mariage de cette ligne sûre, franche, avec les déviations imaginaires qui affectent l’anatomie des personnages. Un certain érotisme se dégage même de ces êtres anthropomorphes, qui exhibent dans leurs postures emphatiques les parties intimes habituellement dissimulées de leur corps presque disloqué. A cet égard, cette œuvre s’inscrit dans la continuité des nus réalisés par Miró à l’académie de la Grande Chaumière la même année et qui avaient suscité de fréquentes méprises (fig. 2) : « On y a vu les provocations d’un érotisme volontaire ou les prolongements d’une activité surréaliste. En réalité, la déformation des figures, que ce soit ou non dans des travaux d’après nature, est liée directement à l’angoisse du peintre, à sa blessure secrète, à sa révolte inexprimée » (J. Dupin, Miró, Paris, 1961, p. 268). C’est alors moins la sexualisation que la bestialité inhérente à toute condition humaine que l’artiste cherche à exprimer dans cette œuvre d’une délicatesse pourtant rare. Cette dernière préfigure en outre la pureté de la ligne qui habitera la série des Constellations quelques années plus tard, en 1940 et 1941, dans une atmosphère cette fois plus stellaire qu’organique.
Jacques Dupin a notamment pu parler de « réalisme tragique » pour caractériser les œuvres de cette période, lorsque, à l’instar de la Nature morte au vieux soulier (fig. 3), une simple nature morte se transfigurait pour devenir un paysage apocalyptique. Dans le présent dessin, le sentiment d’horreur se traduit par le geste et son énergie : libre, franche, instinctive. Malgré son caractère intimiste, Personnages anticipe avec sensibilité les réflexions de l’artiste lui-même, quand il affirme en 1962 : « J’ai compris que le réalisme, un certain réalisme, est un excellent moyen pour surmonter le désespoir tandis que la forme maltraitée vous amène à la mutilation, à la monstruosité » (J. Miró cité in M. Rowell, Joan Miró, Écrits et entretiens, Paris, 1996, p. 288).
After spending the summer of 1936 in Mont-Roig, Joan Miró came home to Paris in the autumn to deliver the works for his monographic exhibition at the Pierre Matisse gallery in New York City. In the months following his return, the Spanish Civil War prevented him from going back to his native Catalonia, forcing him to remain in Paris until 1941, and watch from afar as the horrors of war devastated his country from 1936 to 1939. At the end of April 1937, Miró - along with other artists including Pablo Picasso - was commissioned by the government of the Spanish Republic to create a mural for the Spanish pavilion at that year's Exposition Universelle. As Picasso tackled what would become one of the most magnificent frescoes of recent centuries -Guernica, which Picasso worked on from 1 May to 4 June - Miró finished work on Le Faucheur (fig. 1), depicting a Catalan farmer with chiselled, tormented features, who appears to be letting out a universal cry of distress. The six panels that constituted that work have today disappeared.
As for the floating, bubble-like characters of this drawing, they cannot help but evoke the fragility of civilians faced with the atrocities of war. Along what appears to be a vanishing line leading to the left edge of the page – and with all colour having been removed from the composition, relegated to the margin – Miró pursues his exploration of the grotesque monsters that have been appearing in his work since 1934. Here, the expressive force of the drawing arises from the combination of this sure-handed, forthright line and the imaginary displacements that affect the characters’ anatomy. These anthropomorphic beings even emanate a certain eroticism as they exhibit, in their emphatic postures, the usually concealed private parts of their nearly disintegrated bodies. In this regard, the work is in the same vein as the nudes depicted by Miró at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière that same year, which were misunderstood by a number of people (fig.2): “It has been interpreted as an intentionally erotic provocation or the extension of surrealist activity. In reality, the deformation of the figures, whether or not based on still life, relate directly to the painter’s anguish, his secret trauma, his unexpressed outrage” (J. Dupin, Miró, Paris, 1961, p. 268). In fact, the artist seeks to express the bestiality – rather than the sexualisation – inherent to the human condition in this work, which is nevertheless of a rare sensitivity. Moreover, this work prefigures the purity of line that would inhabit the series of Constellations a few years later, in 1940 and 1941, in an atmosphere more stellar than organic this time.
In particular, Jacques Dupin spoke of “tragic realism” to describe the works of this period, such as Nature morte au vieux soulier (fig. 3), which transfigures a simple still life into an apocalyptic landscape. In this drawing, the feeling of horror is expressed through the stroke and its energy: free, honest, instinctive. Despite its emotional character, Personnages keenly anticipates the reflections of the artist himself, when he asserted in 1962: “I have understood that realism, a certain realism, is an excellent way to overcome despair, while misused form leads to mutilation, to monstrosity” (J. Miró quoted in M. Rowell, Joan Miró, Écrits et entretiens, Paris, 1996, p. 288).
